McCain, Health Insurance Companies Best Friend?
Blue Texan 2008-04-30 14:45
A response to this story in the NY Times: Federal Money in Health Care Plan From McCain McCain thinks that by shifting healthcare insurance from employers to individuals, that will create more competition in insurance markets and drive down prices. Does he think that individuals will be better able to negotiate with insurance companies than large corporations are now? At least my employer has an HR department that can devote time to selecting an insurer. I don't have time to do that sort of research. How much easier for insurance companies to market to individuals instead of negotiate with organizations large enought to actually have some expertise in health care insurance costs. McCain's already shilling for big insurance? And a $5,000 tax credit to buy insurance? Might work for some, but let people rack up some chronic problems, lets say around age 50, and see how far $2,500 dollars will go in buying insurance. Why this foolish appeal to the Market Gods? And he wants to let people buy insurance not regulated by the state they live in. So what's going to happen? Much like credit card regulation, some states will lower regulation to the point of almost zero in an attempt to lure insurance companies to their state. Consumers will have very little recourse in these "insurance regulation-free zones". This is the kind of plan that didn't work for Texas' electric consumers. We supposedly got 'deregulation' and along with it some of the highest electric rates in the country. |
